Science Olympiad (Junior Orienteering) Championships, 10 Mar 2000, Germantown MetroPark

 

The Spring 2000 Science Olympiad (Junior Orienteering) Championship was a huge success.  110 competitors in 65 groups competed on White, Yellow, Orange, and Green Courses.   One family of four had their 1st orienteering experience.  7 workers ensured the event was successful.

 

The courses were designed in December 1999 and vetted and field checked by Karen Dennis and David Irving.  37 controls and 3 water locations were needed for the event.   I set most of the remote controls on Sunday, 05 March 2000.  The remaining controls and the water were placed on Thursday afternoon.  David Irving overprinted the Germantown maps with the courses in early Jan 2000.  In late February 2000, the clue sheets were attached to the overprinted maps and the maps sealed in waterproof bags and sealed.

 

Friday, 10 March 2000 dawned cold, and cloudy.  Temperatures were in the 30's at 7:30am and in the 40's for the 1st start just after 9am.  Winds gusted to speeds around 20 miles per hour.

 

The 1st bus showed up a little after 9am and the rest is history.
