Night Score-O
January 12TH, Cricket Holler Scout Camp

Saturday, 12 Jan 2002, dawned cold and clear. By 10 am when I was out setting controls, the top 1/2-inch of frozen ground was now mud. By 1 pm I had set all 21 controls.
MVOC's last night "O" was not well attended and I thought a night score "O" might be the trick for a good turnout. The Score "O" format was used about 3 years ago, but during the day. The Score "O" format utilizes a mass (all) start at the same time with a limited (usually 1 hour) time limit. I added the last twist, whereby at the end of the time period, grab as many controls as you can and be in within 15 minutes. Perfectly executed, the meet director does not have to go out and pick up any controls that night, or the next day. Great Plan!
Little did I know 121 competitors would turn out for this event? Luckily Trevor Jordan called and volunteered to help. Even before 5pm people arrived, although I did not arrive until 5:15. Trevor and I started registration at 5:30pm and it seemed like it never stopped. Bill Bell arrived to help and was kept real busy.
There was miscommunication about the start time. The newsletter published a 6pm registration; with a 6:30pm start time. An e-Mail I sent stated 6:30pm registration and a 7pm start time. An E-mail received by our sister club, OCIN, stated a 6pm start. I think some of the confusion was a mass start. Most participants had never been to an event with a mass start. Trying to make the best of a bad situation, I split the difference the best I could and had the mass start at appx. 6:40pm. While competitors still waited in line, the mass started. Most had at least 45 minutes on the course.
The results are rank by overall score, and the 2nd chart is by organization, and score.
