GS Camp Whip Poor Will

Sharon Bond, Meet Director

42 people came out in 28 groups to brave the muddy hills of Camp Whip Poor Will for this year's Wildflower Hunt. The day was bright and sunny with highs in the mid 60's, but the camp was extremely muddy due to the previous week's rain. This made for slippery conditions on the infamous Whip Poor Will hills. When someone says that it was easier to just go straight up and down instead of contouring, then you know it's pretty bad. This year's event was held score-style, which meant that you could go out and get just those controls that you wanted to get, depending on how many hills you had to climb. If you went for all 17 on what was considered the optimal route (4.17K, 240m climb), then you would be climbing back up 4 times.

Another complicating factor was all the logging that is being done in the northeast portion of the camp. Those who ventured up to those controls found even more mud and many downed trees. The vegetation boundaries in that part of the camp will be out of whack for a long time until they finish and the area re-establishes itself naturally.

Many, many thanks to John Betts, who helped set water controls, then ran start and finish, and helped pick up controls. Also thanks to Matt Bond for his help in cleaning up the event.
